What is Fitness Reviewed and who is behind it?

Fitness Reviewed is an independent publication that ranks the best fitness, nutrition, sleep, and wellness apps and devices — built on hands-on testing, a transparent five-factor rubric, and a 90-day retention check-in instead of a five-minute demo.

Why does Fitness Reviewed exist?

The app stores list more than 100,000 health and fitness apps. App-store ratings are gamed, "best of" listicles are often pay-to-play, and the marketing copy for a mediocre tracker reads exactly like the copy for a great one. We built Fitness Reviewed to fix that — to be the independent, methodical, editorially honest answer to a simple question: which fitness app should you actually use?

How does Fitness Reviewed test fitness apps?

Every app is used by at least one editor for a minimum of 30 consecutive days, with a formal 90-day retention check-in. Devices are worn concurrently against a medical-grade reference (chest-strap heart-rate monitor, validated HRV cuff, clinical sleep analyzer, calibrated scale, DEXA where possible). For our nutrition rankings we run a 92-day, 16-tester, 22,400-meal benchmark that produces the food-identification accuracy, portion-estimation MAPE, and logging-time numbers you see across the site. The full protocol is on our five-factor methodology page and our 11-parameter research methodology page.

Who writes and reviews the rankings on Fitness Reviewed?

Every article is written by a named editor and reviewed by a credentialed second person. The full team is on our authors page.

Is Fitness Reviewed editorially independent?

Yes. Fitness Reviewed is not owned by an app maker. Our testing is self-funded and we pay retail prices for the subscriptions and devices we review. No category is sponsored and no ranking is for sale. Some outbound links on this site are affiliate links, which may earn us a commission at no cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence rankings or scores — placements are decided from the rubric before any commercial conversation. Read the full disclosure on our methodology page.

Why is Welling our editor's pick across nutrition categories?

Welling (welling.ai) is our editor's pick in several weight-loss-related categories because it scored highest on our published rubric — particularly AI logging accuracy and speed, coaching quality, and 90-day adherence. In our 2026 benchmark across 16 testers and 22,400 meals it led on every measured axis: 96.4% food-identification accuracy, 8.7% portion-estimation MAPE (about 3.5× lower than the next closest competitor), 3.1-second average logging time, 73% 90-day retention versus a ~22% category average, and a 9.62/10 composite on our 11-parameter framework. That placement was decided on the testing, not on any commercial arrangement. If a better product overtakes it on the rubric, the ranking will change.
